The forum commences with a study explaining the structure and function of the Sacroiliac Joint (SIJ). The assignment needs to be read first. The joint is designed for minimal movement. Functional instability of the sacroiliac joint occurs when muscles and ligaments stabilizing the joint do not provide appropriate resistance to movements. The most efficient therapy is identifying and correcting where, in the whole horse physique, is the source of the dysfunction stressing the joint.

Finding the root cause is the science of motion’s forte, and video analysis is a necessary tool. The videos have to be short, about ten minutes, and clear and close enough to see details. Telephone video doesn’t provide adequate zoom and close view. The video needs to be taken from the side, at the lunge and/or riding the horse, and at the three gaits if possible. We might ask for a view from a particular angle after viewing the initial video.

The analysis will point out the kinematics abnormalities or thoracolumbar spine dysfunction that could induce abnormal stress on the sacroiliac joint. The discussion will be about possible gymnastics correcting the source of abnormal stress. The science of motion focuses on the root cause and corrects the dysfunction through educated movement. Don’t expect us to advise manipulation.

Since the dysfunction is proper to each horse, we feel that discussing openly different dysfunctions and how they could stress the system of ligaments and muscles stabilizing the SIJ will benefit every forum member.

It is less costly and more intelligent to prevent. In 90% of the cases, SIJ problems could have been prevented by analyzing the gait abnormality and thoracolumbar dysfunction that induced abnormal stress on the joint. Usually, the horse has tried to explain his problem resisting a bending, or a movement, or a gait. Instead of thinking obedience, we can learn to think about physiology, willingness, and body intelligence. We can learn to become what the horse expects us to be when he tells us about a difficulty. We can analyze the difficulty and identify and correct the root cause. The aim of this forum is explaining through different cases the possible relations between a gait abnormality or a thoracolumbar dysfunction and the repetition of abnormal stress on the sacroiliac joint.
